My Dearest Kaya,
I’m writing this in April of the year 2012, skin glowing from the kiss of the Palawan sun, head still rocking from the turbulence that jostled our tiny plane as we prepared to land back in Manila.

We don’t need to submerge ourselves in guilt and pity. Neither of those serve anyone. We can only do so much, and everything starts within you. The best you can do to serve those around you is to realize how quickly everything you have could disappear. Increase your perspective. Making every day count is more a state of mind than anything else.
This day that you are alive and well, sitting at a computer and browsing through images of a disaster so far removed from your everyday life that there is hardly a way you could fully fathom what it is like… just think about it. Be aware. Recall this feeling some day in the future when you’re letting yourself get upset about your internet being slow or your coffee being too hot.
